March 24th - 30th

30 min. Radio Promo for Masquerade

1 hour - Hanging Posters and Handing out fliers at the school

2 hours - Setting up a booth at the cub, brought in giant mushroom and promoted event to students

1.5 hours - Setting up a mass email to students about the masquerade through Mitchel Davis as well as getting a mass email of the poster sent out to 200 of Jenn Wagnon's students. She offered them cultural event credit if they came to the masquerade.

1.5 hour - Created mass email lists on our server and sent out emails to rally people for the upcoming event. Created new links on the website.

1 hour - Meeting in the Park with performers and producers of masquerade for final run through.

2 hours - Meeting with Bailey regarding website. Learned more capabilities of Photoshop, Dreamweaver, and Illustrator. Discussed direction to take the website and online magazine.

5 hours - Setting up equipment and decorations for the masquerade at the Abbey.

2 hours - Clean up after the event the following day as well as gathering funds and finalizing things with Chuck at the Abbey.

30 minutes - Discussed what to do with funds and how to go about thank-you's and in-kind trade for contributors with Cy, Gretchen, Richard, and Isaac.

2 hours - Talked to businesses downtown about 4c and solicited donations. Made good contact with Steamworks, Ken and Sue's, DSP, Randy's, East by Southwest, SW Booktrader, and The Palace. Made initial contact with Jean Pierre's, Cuckoos, Cypress Cafe, and Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory.

February 17 - 23

2 hours - Planning meeting primarily focused on the Spring Equinox Festival. The Imagination Masquerade and Trade will be held March 29th at the Abbey Theatre from 8pm - 1am. The first two hours will focus on the artisans trade and silent auction. Live performers will fill the Abbey inside and out - firedancers, drummers, musicians, poi dancers, jugglers, burlesque dancers, etc. The Abbey will be portioned off into areas of fire, air, earth, and water. At 10pm the masquerade will start, and the music will include djs and possibly a couple of bands.

4 hours - Creating decorations for the Abbey. Half a dozen of us met at Molly's house and created giant flowers to hang from the ceiling, a tie-died sheet streamer waterfall, fire streamers and blower and other decorations.

1 hour - Kurt and I began constructing the first mushroom for the giant mushroom forest which will be featured at the summer festival and previewed at the masquerade. We are starting with paper mache and wire - if we can perfect a solid design we may try to build some strong enough to climb on.

2 hours - Researching domain and hosting and buying a domain. Talked to IT at FLC and Brainstorm but didn't really get much help as they weren't familiar with Joomla. After talking to Dan, researched different hosting sites online that already had Joomla Apps. Purchased a site for a year through SiteGround and uploaded Joomla. Our site name is We4C.org.

4 hours - Working on Turtle Lake Refuge website. Completed a couple recipe videos, polished several of the videos, took screenshots of many of the videos and cleaned them up in Photoshop, uploaded videos to Vimeo! and YouTube, cleaned up webpages in Dreamweaver.

January 27 - February 2

2.5 hrs - Weekly Meeting - developed and discussed: Spring Fundraiser, pros and cons of seeking non-profit status, other ways of raising money, organization. 10 plus in attendance.

2 hrs - Creative Meeting - Shared visions for the summer festival which is at the heart of the project - discussed different workshops, art and music ideas; looked over Mikkae's 8-page proposal for a documentary on the festival.

30 min - Set up an account with Lynda. Watched preliminary videos.

2 hrs - Installing Wamp and Joomla on hard drive and computer and trying to get them to work.

4 hrs - Refining Vegas Skills on documentary: Editing, Color Correction, Text, Subtitles, and Credits; tryed to figure out text in photoshop

Feb. 3 - 9

3 hrs - Weekly meeting: formed separate committees for the Spring Fundraiser/ masquerade ball / mini-festival; website / magazine develoment; summer festival; and long-term business / non-profit organization plan.
Used a "talking stick" to go around the circle and get everybody's input on each branch. Approx. 10 in attendance.

2 hrs - Met with Molly to edit, revise, and learn the functions of our Wiki site; discussed vision for summer festival and how we would involve local businesses; discussed design of the website.

3 hrs -Installed Joomla and Wamp on lab computers, more lab comuters, reinstalled, reinstalled, reinstalled, other computers, other harddrives, more reinstalls. Success in opening Joomla's installation once - but immediately stopped working.

4 hrs plus - More practice in Vegas: editing, color correction, learning credits, and text, and Vegas's limitations.

3 hrs - Second of weekly meetings I attended. About 20 of us spent the evening hashing out the mission statement for the group and what we were about.

3 hrs - Met later in the week with Cy and Stacey to further discuss the project - including the festival, the magazine, the website, and organization. Created a Wikispace for the group:

January 20 - 26

3hrs - Weekly meeting; discussed development of the website and other objectives and roles that need to be filled on the production side and the festival side.

3 hrs - Researching open source management systems and Joomla. Watched introductory and tutorial videos; explored Joomla site and how to get started; researched other projects that have been done with Joomla.

3 hrs - Met with Cy and Mikkae to discuss Dreamtime and elements that we would like to include in our festival and website. Set up a Myspace page and Gmail account. Tried to get a Facebook group going.

Acorn Milk Anyone?

Growing Roots

This is the documentary we produced on Turtle Lake Refuge for our final project. Had alot of fun with this project and learned alot. Hope this film can inspire a person or two to check it out and try some local raw food lunch!

A Taste of What is to Come?

I think there's a good chance Bush and Cheney are going to get hit with more than a shoe after they leave office. Of course they'll probably have private security out the wazzoo for the rest of their lives too.

Hopefully we can really take this country in a new direction and start to reverse some of the intense animosity we have provoked around the world.

The Power of YouTube

So if you search for Argentina Dirty War you can find hundreds of pertinent videos. Protests are still going on as this home video shows. The children of the disappeared who were kidnapped by their parent's murderers are in their 20s today. Birth certificates were forged, and many do not know that their family is a fraud. But the grandmothers have not given up. 85 of the "missing generation" have been found, and at least 500 cases are known about and being actively searched for today.

People still going missing - Argentinians skeptical

So this guy went missing after his testimony helped bring down old war criminals. It seems many feel the governments talk of no more impunity is just rhetoric and believe the old systems and structures and corruption is still in place.

No more impunity?

Even after the junta was overthrown, the general and other military leaders were protected by the new "democratic" government, which obviously infuriated the people of Argentina. Just recently, they have said they will no longer provide impunity to these criminals, as it is not in the interest of developing a democracy. The first 3 or 4 minutes of this interview talk about the change.

Garaje Olimpo

Another Argentinian film about the dirty war of 1976-1983. I did a presentation on the power of film as a means of protest and remembrance. That's where I got all these clips.

This movie was directed by a guy who was actually tortured by the regime. You can see at least several large portions of it online.

The sort of anti-establishing shot of the muddy water in the beginning is important. The film focuses on two stories - one of a girl taken to a concentration camp who tries to use her sexuality and relationship with one of the torturers to save her life. The other story is based on the true story of the resistance and a girl who placed a bomb under the bed of a cop who was her friend's dad. The girl in the camp suffers the same fate as everyone else and is dumped out of a plane at several thousand feet into the muddy water at the same time as the bomb goes off in the film.

Filmmakers Speak Out

This is a trailer for the Argentinian film, Moebius. It was created by a professor and a bunch of his students and has earned international accalaim. A moebius strip has no end, you can make one by taking a strip of paper, twisting it and taping the ends together. If you trace a line around it, it would eventually run back into itself.

So the film is an allegorical sci-fi movie. Gustavo (the director) was also an engineer thus the sci-fi story, but the underlying message is about the "disappeared" in Argentina that I mentioned in my last blogs. The idea is that there is a subway full of people that is trapped on a moebius strip, still out there but unacknowledged by society and the government.

Gustavo worked on a very small budget and used his engineering skills to rig a camera on the subway to get the crazy tunnel shots.

Horrifying History Part 2

Here's part two of the Al Jazeera doc. Concentration camps, genocide, and torture on par with the Nazis. And this was only a few years ago! Alot of evidence suggests that the militray overthrow was backed by the U.S. government. Henry Kissinger told Videla (the dictator general) "look we would like you to succeed...if you can finish before Congress gets back the better." The story of the 22 year old girl is heartbreaking.

Horrifying History

This is the first of a two part doc put out by Al Jazeera about the 10,000 to 30,000 people that were "disappeared" in Argentina between 1976-1983 after a military dictatorship overthrew the government. If you're not familiar with what happened I'd recommend taking the 20 minutes, but it's intense. At least 500 known pregnant students, artists, and political activists were kidnapped for their babies. They were tortured until they gave birth, then loaded like cattle onto a plane and dumped alive over the Atlantic Ocean.
